I was asked today at a candidate forum if I would cut an extracurricular teacher before I'd cut an academic teacher. I think our district does not have to make that choice. I believe that the benefits that these students here receive through their commitment to and involvement in their sport is equally as valuable to what they gain from their academic rigor. Opportunities for leadership, collaboration, communication, time management, goal-setting and more are advantages that students gain from involvement in activities like athletics, robotics, band, orchestra, choir, ceramics, dance, theater, wrestling, cheer...to name a few! The mission statement for our district is to support the WHEEL approach to educational excellence by creating graduates who are Well rounded, Healthy individuals, Effective communicators, Engaged citizens, and Life-long learners. These are values that I support and feel are worthy of asking our community to invest in. So the real choice that we have to make is not about which teacher to cut, but whether we are going to invest in the future of our children or not. Academics....athletics...arts....they are ALL important. Just because forces at the state level are underfunding education doesn't mean that we have to here at Eanes. Generations before us have invested in our schools. I believe that we have the responsibility to do so ourselves, for the benefit of our students now and for the benefit of our community for decades to come. Join me in supporting this bond on May 9th and in getting this sentiment at the Trustee table with a vote for Julia Webber, Place Four.
