Last night, in the midst of campaign celebrations with my supporters, my cell phone rang. I'm glad I felt my phone ring and took the call, because it was Jay Howard on the other end of the line. He congratulated me and offered his support in the years ahead. In addition to my gratitude shared then and again that night with an email, I'd like to publicly thank him here.
I think that democracy thrives when elected seats are contested. Jay pushed the conversation to be clearer and from the process of meeting him and hearing his perspective, I was forced to clarify my rationale for what I believe. Because of that, I learned a lot from my interactions with him and the members of the community who supported his sentiments. The campaign was better because of Jay's participation.
Our community came forth 2 to 1 in support of the bond. And while this resounding victory rings loudly the majority sentiment that EISD excellence is worthy of our investment, I feel that we can not ignore the underlying voices who support other solutions for meeting our needs. The philosophy upon which I campaigned was Unite. Engage. Create! If we are truly going to unite our community, then we must engage all the stakeholders and have fair representation in community dialogs that precede decisions made by the Trustees that impact the community. During his campaign, Jay effectively messaged the sentiments of his supporters. I applaud his personal efforts to represent this sentiment and am committed as Trustee to welcoming Jay and his supporters to engage in future dialog.
Thank you, Jay. And thank you, Jay's supporters. I hope that we can work together to find common cause in our efforts on behalf of our EISD community.
Sincerely,
Julia Webber
